Free Agency is Alive and Kicking

After the lull that the absence of football left over the last month, we are back to an exciting time for sports!

Baseball’s Opening Day is just around the corner, we are in the heart of March Madness and NFL Free Agents have hit the market.

This is the time of the year that some football fans love while others loathe. It is the time of the year when owners can re-energize a franchise or make you stop to scratch your head wondering “what were they thinking?”

Speaking of scratching your head, that’s exactly what I was doing Tuesday when Peyton put ink to paper with the Denver Broncos.

Now I think Peyton is a great QB but I’m not quite sure it was a good move for him. He repeatedly said in his presser that he and the Broncos were committed to winning and their goal was a Super Bowl. Now sure every team has a chance to go to the Super Bowl, and the Broncos had a great run last year but it took some magic just to finish 8-8 and to think that it can be easily topped is a little foolish.

Peyton ran the Colts, he played in a dome, had double digit wins and won the division basically every season; he won multiple MVP’s and in 13 seasons he was able to win only ONE Championship.

Now you think after this major surgery and a whole season off you can go into in a cold thin air city with possibly a less talented roster and repeat the success you had in Indy immediately?

If anything, the 49ers have a more complete team and are located in a better climate, and if he was so focused on winning now I think he would’ve had a better chance there.

Personally I don’t see why the Colts would ever toss the center piece of their franchise to the curb unless they really thought it was close to impossible for him to be the Peyton of old again.

I have no doubt that he can go out there and throw a ball, but I want to see him get hit again and again in a real game and see him continue to get back up, then and only then will I believe that he could return to his old glory.

I guess we will just have to wait and see; the Broncos do come to Baltimore this year so we may have a chance to see it for ourselves.

Speaking of Baltimore, since this is a Ravens blog I probably should say something about our team.

For Ravens fans so far it has been another year to say goodbye to some more familiar faces. It seems as though in a blink of an eye we lost Jarret Johnson, Ben Grubbs, Haruki Nakamura, Tom Zbikowski and Cory Redding. They all put their stamp on Baltimore in one way or another and while good things must always come to an end we won’t forget their impact on our team.

One of my favorite memories came via the Ravens version of an iron man, Double J, just this past September. He laid a hit on Hines Ward that I will never forget and it will always bring a smile to my face.

All but Redding were drafted by Ozzie Newsome, meaning we were the first team to recognize and have enough confidence in their talent to make them part of the Ravens organization. And after a few years of playing for the Ravens all of these guys were sought after by another team.

If this doesn’t give you even more confidence in our front office’s ability to find extraordinary talent I don’t know what will.

So yes while some players’ tenures in Baltimore will come to an end, that just means there will be a new beginning for others. Whether these new players come via the draft or free agency our front office makes the decisions that will be best for the Baltimore Ravens and they will give us the best chance to succeed.

So while some will sit and ponder the moves around the league, just remember the phrase we go by here in Baltimore…

“In Ozzie We Trust”

  2. Peyton is definitely not going to be the QB he once was. Broncos are taking a big chance with him. I agree with you Katrina- why else would Indy not bring back their star.
Considering how much Denver loved Tebow and his potential for growth they should have stuck with him. It's gonna be an interesting year for the Broncos.
Ravens have the potential to mix together fresh new faces with our tried and true vets.
    Love Bmores OzzieFest!
